Cataract

What is a Cataract?

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in America today. A cataract is formed when natural protein in your eye begins to build up and eventually makes your eye cloudy. Cataracts are not known to be preventable, and almost everyone will develop cataracts as they age. Age is the only known cause of cataracts, and is unfortunately something that we can not prevent.

Treatment

Luckily, vision loss caused by cataracts is not permanent, and vision can be restored with surgery. While surgery is the only treatment available for cataracts, cataract surgery is quick, painless and very effective. Today, patients have many options concerning cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery

Before you go in for cataract surgery, you and your eye doctor at Bay Eye Care will discuss which lens implant would best suit your needs. An artificial lens will replace your natural cataract affected lens. Patients with astigmatism can choose astigmatism correcting Toric lenses, for example. If you have pre-existing refractive errors, you may be able to choose a lens that correct cataracts and your refractive error at once!

Cataract surgery is an extremely common procedure. Some may choose to have an early cataract development taken out, while some may temporarily correct blurry vision with eyeglasses or contact lenses. As a general rule, adoctor will recommend cataract surgery once cataracts affect daily activities.

If you have been told that you have cataracts, or if you are showing the symptoms of cataract development, call Bay Eye Care Center! We will go through the options with you, and get you on the right track to clear vision!
